What does the Living Beyond Means indicator show?
Understand the Living Beyond Means indicator.
The Living Beyond Means indicator measures the proportion of people who are spending significantly more than they receive in income.
How It’s Calculated
This measure is based on anonymised, aggregated bank account data over the previous 13 weeks:
- Sum of Credits: The total amount paid into each account over 13 weeks.
- Sum of Debits: The total amount spent from the same account in that period.
- Threshold Comparison: We identify accounts where spending (debits) exceeds 120% of income (credits).
- Proportion Counted: The indicator shows the percentage of all accounts in an area that meet this criterion.
Tip:
Higher proportions suggest more people in that area are regularly spending well beyond their means, which can be an indicator of financial vulnerability.
