What is the geographic level and granularity of the data?
How granular is the data, and at what geographic level can it be explored?
The Economic Wellbeing Explorer offers insights at multiple geographic levels, depending on your zoom level and subscription. These geographic areas are defined using International Territorial Levels (ITLs), which are standard statistical regions for the UK.
Currently, the underpinning financial dataset of 5m current accounts is only available for Scotland, Wales and England, meaning Northern Ireland is not represented.
Below is an overview of each view:
National Level
- Coverage: ITL1 aggregation level for Scotland and Wales, and at the national level for England.
- Description: Shows financial wellbeing and contextual indicators aggregated to the broadest national level.
Regional Level
- Coverage: ITL2 regions for Scotland and Wales, ITL1 level for England (2025 boundaries)
- Description: Provides a more detailed view of indicators by subdividing Great Britain into smaller regions.
Local Authority Level (Paid Subscription Only)
- Coverage: Local Authorities (Local Authority District (LAD), excluding District Councils.
- Description: Provides further granularity by splitting the regional areas to LADs.
LAD refers to the geographic area for which a local government body is responsible.
Data presented at 'local authority district’ level encompasses 32 Local Authority Districts in Scotland and 22 in Wales. In England, where council structures vary, LAD encompasses 153 council types defined as County Councils, Unitary Authorities (including the Isles of Scilly), London Boroughs (including City of London) and Metropolitan Boroughs.
More information on council types in England can be found here.
Currently data is not presented at District Council level - please reach out to us if you would like to request data visibility at District Council level.
Neighbourhood Level (Paid Subscription Only)
- Coverage: Local Authorities (Local Authority District (LAD) and Intermediate Zones/MSOAs)
- Description: This view offers the highest level of detail available on the platform. It shows data at Middle Super Output Area (MSOA) level for Wales and England, and at Intermediate Zone level for Scotland.
Tip:
You can move between these levels by zooming in or out on the map. The dashboard will automatically adjust to display the appropriate granularity.
Need to jump to a specific location? Use the ‘Navigate to’ option in the left Explore panel.
