Why does the time series look more volatile in some years?
Understanding peaks and troughs in the time series view.
You may notice that the time series chart for certain indicators appears more volatile (i.e., the line has more pronounced peaks and dips) in some years.
This happens because:
- Volatility in the yearly comparison view occurs because the current year may not yet have a full set of data points. Early in the year (e.g., March), only a few months of data are available, so the line may appear more jagged..
- Data smoothing improves over time.
As more months are added in the current year, the line becomes smoother and trends are easier to see.
